The CIPD Level 7 Advanced Award in Reward Management programme gives you the in-depth technical knowledge and skills to develop tailored reward strategies and solutions that support real organisational and business needs.


We are very pleased to announce that a Postgraduate Certificate in Reward Management (PCRM), validated by Middlesex University, is now available.
Eligible students who have completed the Advanced Award in Reward Management can upgrade to do the Postgraduate Certificate in Reward Management through Recognition of Prior Learning. This will involve an additional fee. Please call +44 (0)20 8612 6202 for more details.

Who is it for
The CIPD Level 7 Advanced Award in Reward Management qualification provides a means of professional recognition in the field of reward management. It is relevant for pay and reward specialists and HR generalists wishing to either continue in a generalist role or specialise in reward.

On successful completion of the programme, you’ll be able to:

  • assess and utilise all the key components of reward management, including contemporary approaches and developments
  • diagnose reward issues and determine an appropriate fit between reward schemes and the business and wider external context
  • apply reward knowledge and skills with confidence in public, private or voluntary sector settings
  • optimise the effectiveness of reward budget spending
  • ensure that pay systems are not discriminatory
  • develop the reward programme so that it is adaptable and does not become a source of competitive disadvantage
  • analyse the relationship between the environment, strategy and systems of reward management
  • explore the conceptual apparatus and theoretical debates informing reward management
  • critically discuss traditional, contingent and knowledge bases for transactional and relational rewards
  • design internally consistent reward structures that recognise labour market and equity constraints
  • analyse executive and expatriate rewards in an international context
Course Module 1 : Introductory Workshop - Duration: 1

This introductory workshop helps you to understand the structure and requirements of the CIPD Advanced Level Award in Reward Management programme. It identifies the opportunities, challenges and sources of help and support available. It covers some general aspects of reward management.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to:

  • identify the key requirements of the programme
  • define the components of reward
  • analyse the links between reward, the organisation and the external environment
  • explain the factors that influence people to join or leave an organisation
  • identify the factors that create engagement and motivate employees to deliver high performance
  • evaluate the skills required of reward specialists.
Course Module 2 : Base and Variable Pay - Duration: 2
This two-day course module focuses on structuring and managing base pay; designing variable pay programmes, and delivering on-going financial support to your business organisation.
Course Module 3 : Benefits, Pensions and Share Schemes - Duration: 2
This two-day course module will give you the the confidence, knowledge and skills to make an influential contribution to the management of your organisation’s benefit plans, pensions, and share schemes.
Course Module 4 : Reward in Context - Duration: 2
This practical and interactive two-day course module uses case studies to deliver the specialist knowledge needed to aligning reward strategy with the business, HR and organisational strategy. It addresses the reward environment in which the organisation operates and looks at the resources required to manage reward schemes.
Course Module 5 : Global Mobility - Duration: 1
This one-day course module will help you develop specialist knowledge in global mobility and be better equipped to manage your company’s assignment programme, develop and negotiate expatriate packages and manage the interface with third party providers.

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Award in Reward Management.

How to gain

To gain the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Award in Reward Management, you must attend:

  • Introductory Workshop (one-day)
  • Base and Variable Pay course module (two-day)
  • Benefits, Pensions and Share Schemes course module (two-day)
  • Reward in Context course module (two-day)
  • Global Mobility course module (one-day)

Successfully complete:

  • one written assignment
  • independent learning

You have up to 18 months to complete the qualification.

Course Tutors

Ms Sylvia Doyle

Sylvia is managing director of Reward First® People Consulting, the reward consultancy she founded in 2004 and founding partner of Reward Consulting Partners which she established with three reward colleagues in 2011. Sylvia’s expertise includes pay structures; total reward; variable pay, executive remuneration and strategic reward to develop and implement reward solutions that impact employee engagement and bottom-line results. Sylvia also mentors HR decision makers and leaders on reward, having established a successful reward mentoring programme in 2010.

Sylvia was previously European Head of C&B for McCormick, the global leader of spices, seasonings and flavours. Sylvia is an independent non-executive director on the RICS remuneration committee and was Vice Chair of the board of Abingdon & Witney College and chair of their remuneration committee until recently. Sylvia speaks on reward issues in the UK and internationally.

Mrs Ray Parmenter

Ray has been delivering CIPD programmes for 17 years and other business or management related linked areas. Ray has been a personal tutor for the CIPD’s Advanced Award in Reward Management for the last nine years and has taught in both Further and Higher Education for a number of institutions in Kent and Hertfordshire and as a senior lecturer for ten years in Bedfordshire. Ray has also been an external examiner and moderator. Before the start of her academic career, she had HR roles in hospitality and manufacturing including a short period in Australia.

Mr Simon Richardson

Currently Head of Global Mobility at Total Reward Solutions, a ‘boutique’ Reward Consultancy established in October 2005. A founder member of the business responsible for all aspects of running the Global Mobility business including business development, managing outsourced assignment programmes and client advisory services. Technical areas of specialisation include expatriate compensation and benefit design, tax and social security planning, assignment cost tracking, global mobility policy development and the legal issues associated with assignment contracts. Previous roles include Senior Manager at PwC setting up an internal Global Mobility function between 1996 and 2003 and managing Logica assignees between 1989 and 1996.

Mr Mark Childs

Mark is Managing Director of the Total Reward Group, comprising the boutique reward consultancy Total Reward Solutions and the specialist search and interim practice Total Reward Careers. He has previously headed up global compensation and benefits in Fidelity Investments, Seagram, Chubb, Reckitt & Colman plc and Forte plc. His early career was as an HR Generalist, with an academic background in industrial relations. Mark is a Chartered Companion and former Vice President Reward of CIPD. During this time he was chief architect of CIPD’s Advanced Award in Reward Management and is Tutor for the Pensions, Share Schemes and Benefits module. A Fellow of the Institute of Consulting, Mark is a former member of the CBI’s National Employment Policy Committee and author of Personnel Today’s One Stop Guide to Reward Management. He is an experienced reward adviser and currently Chairman of the Remuneration Committee of Atlantic Equities LLP.

Mr Denis Crowe

Denis is a freelance reward management consultant and until August 2011 worked as the Head of Reward Consulting at Pilat HR Solutions. In 2012 Denis set up his own consulting business, Denis Crowe Consulting Limited. Prior to January 2005, Denis worked as a senior manager in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ human resource consulting practice. His expertise encompasses all aspects of reward management, including: high level reviews of payment systems and reward strategies; pay and grading reviews; performance incentive arrangements; and market pricing of jobs including salary and benefit surveys. He has led a wide range of remuneration engagements in both the public (including executive agencies) and private sectors, across European and International locations. Most of these involved a wider review of business objectives and linking reward policies and practices to business requirements.

Mr Clive Wright

Clive is Director of Hyperion HR Ltd. The company provides HR and reward consulting services to business leaders and HR Directors. He established Hyperion after leaving Mercer in 2009 following 8 years as a Principal working with FTSE 100 and international companies. Prior to joining Mercer he fulfilled senior global HR and Reward roles for major international companies. Clive served as Chair of the CIPD Reward Forum for eight years and currently delivers both the ‘Developing a Reward Strategy’ and 'Reward in Context' courses. He is a Visiting Professor at City of London Business School and the Council Director of the European and Asia-Pacific Compensation and Benefits Councils of The Conference Board.

Module by Module Payment Option

You can either pay the full fee up-front, or pay on a course module by course module basis.

The fees include all tuition, personal tutor support, assessment, course material and access to the dedicated Virtual Learning Environment. They don’t include travel, accommodation or registration as a studying member of the CIPD, mandatory for all candidates who are not already CIPD members.
