We're experiencing continuous change in the way we learn and consume information with traditional media becoming fast outdated and digital approaches becoming more effective and inclusive.

The Digital Learning Design programme from CIPD Training will give you both the competence and confidence to create your own engaging digital learning content.

Regardless of your organisation’s learning strategy, digital learning content, in all its forms – including web pages, videos, animations, podcasts, PDFs, quizzes, slides and interactive scenarios to name a few will continue to play an ever-increasing role. In the classroom, on the job, on the move or at home.

The workshop duration is five-days with an optional digital learning design project that must be submitted 8 weeks after the workshop. This will be reviewed by the facilitator.

This programme is designed for anyone who wants to develop their skills and confidence in designing and developing effective digital learning content.

  • Anyone who is considering digital learning content at a strategic level may benefit from the increased understanding this workshop delivers. However, it is important to note that it does not explicitly consider the strategic implications associated with digital learning content. 

Please note: This course is not suitable for someone who specifically want to develop depth of knowledge in the functionality of a specific tool.



By the end of the course you'll be able to:

  • Question a project sponsor to determine the learning requirements, the characteristics of the target population and the logistical constraints
  • Given this information, determine whether digital learning content will add value, the form(s) that this content should take, and the skills, tools, time and budget required to design and develop the content
  • Develop a clear, logical and concise proposal to the project sponsor outlining all of the above
  • Establish a design and development process that will deliver the content to the required standard within the budget and timeframe, ensuring adequate provision for inevitable changes in the light of new information, shifting business needs, developing ideas and learner feedback
  • Work with specialists to determine the technical content that needs to be covered, but without surrendering the initiative in terms of the design and always with the needs of the learner in mind
  • Given an approved proposal for digital learning content, and in consultation with other specialists where necessary, develop a design for the content that clearly describes the end product and provides other information needed by the project sponsor and other stakeholders to progress with the development of the content
  • Write clearly and concisely for the screen and for voice
  • Create or source suitable imagery (photos, illustrations, diagrams, charts) and perform whatever simple edits are required to suit the intended purpose
  • Describe the conditions necessary for high quality audio and video recording and post-production
  • Within the constraints of the course environment, record audio and video and perform simple edits
  • Effectively combine text, images and other media elements to create slide shows, animations, software demos, web pages and PDFs that conform to established design principles
  • Effectively integrate interactivity into multimedia materials in order to design tutorials and scenarios that conform to established design principles and deliver on their learning objectives
  • Write test items that validly and reliably test the achievement of specific learning objectives

Day 1

  • Welcome and introductions
  • Analysing learning needs
  • Practical assignment 1 – visual design
  • General principles of visual design

Day 2

  • Writing for the screen and for voice
  • Practical assignment 2 – create a web article or PDF
  • Recording and editing audio
  • Practical assignment 3 – create a podcast
  • Creating animated videos
  • Practical assignment 4 – create an animated video

Day 3

  • Working with subject experts and other stakeholders
  • Finalise practical assignment 4
  • Shooting and editing video
  • Practical assignment 5 – create a video (planning)

Day 4

  • The design and development process
  • Continue working on practical assignment 5 – create a video
  • Quizzes and questioning
  • Designing and building interactive content
  • Practical assignment 6 – create an interactive scenario or tutorial (planning)

Day 5

  • Documenting design
  • Complete practical assignments 5 and 6 (video and interactive content)
  • Review practical assignments 5 and 6
  • Close


Please note: learners will need to bring their own laptops and will need access to basic tools, i.e. a recent version of Microsoft Office, free or open source audio, video and picture editors (unless, of course, they own professional tools). A list of recommended tools will be provided on enrolment in the joining instructions.

Barry is a consultant, trainer and facilitator, helping individuals and organisations to make better choices about how they design and deliver learning ‐ particularly if it involves technology. His work focusses on creating effective and efficient content to support learning, communication and performance in the workplace – and building the capability of others to do the same.
